1. Hi Chris,

   I get similar queries (sometimes up to 2-3 a week) from the New Zealand business community. It’s a tough one – I usually point them in the direction of the PHP users group mailing list (in our case we have one very active list for the whole country which makes it easier) but whilst it’s giving them a direction to look in, there’s no structure around it to make the process easier for potential employers. A localised job board could potentially provide that.

4. When I receive a letter with job offer I usually trying to find a right person. But here is a some thoughts on the subject: people sending such emails usually know about the boards and maybe dissatisfied with their quality? So why just another board will help them? Anyway, the job board will increase the PHPDeveloper popularity. So that may be a reason to put effort into creating it.

5. There are PHP specific job sites out there.. http://www.phpjobs.com comes to mind… the problem is getting them publicity, and how to ensure they don’t start sucking due to spammers and crawlers.

6. That’s a question we deal with quite a bit. The answer is usually not job boards, or project posting sites as you run into amateur developers, overseas and are very often difficult to manage.

   PHP in the enterprise is still rather young and as such quality developers are very difficult to come by. Just try to find a quality OOP programmer for a short term project, it’s difficult.

   Regardless, as an enterprise PHP development firm we have very competent developers on our team. We’ll always work in B2B situations or offer one of our developers up for a freelance contract.

8. Hey Enygma,

   I often get this kind of requests and usually I refer them back to LinkedIn or PHPJobs. In my opinion they are the most valuable recources for business to open up their php-related job openings (LinkedIn can be used for sooo much more).

   Sometimes when I don’t have a busy schedule I tend to offer my own services as a freelancer. But most of the time, businesses want someone close by (and they don’t want to sponsor me for a green-card) so in those cases I provide them with all php links I have.

9. I just created an online social network to solve this problem as a direct response to this blog entry. Through this community, we can meet other contractors and learn their skill level so that we can recommend our overflow clients. 10. I get these requests sometimes, but not so frequently as I used to. I think the best thing to do would be to mention a friend who’s looking for some work (if you have any), and then direct them to a php developer’s community of your choice. But make sure it’s of your choosing, of course, because you don’t want to send them to some arbitrary site where they’ll be disappointed.

    The answer is that there is no cookie-cutter answer. Everyone wants something different, and if you’re not looking for the work, then they’re out of luck. Unless they’re desperate, then they’ll have other resources.
